UTSW fighting antibiotic resistence with Discovery!

One of the greatest challenges facing medicine today is how to keep up with emerging antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  Dr. Greenberg and his team have created a synthetic nucleotide oligomer compound that specifically targets and blocks a bacterial efflux pump used to expel antibiotics. This is a common antibiotic resistance mechanism. In essence, this compound can transform highly resistant bacteria to become sensitive to the same antibiotics they previously exhibited resistance to. The hope is to use this compound to boost the efficacy of antibiotics against resistant bacteria.
